A very unique and rewarding hardy fern, this delightful selection performs well in any rich, evenly moist soil. As it name implies it towers above other painted ferns. It forms a massive, arching clump of silvery fronds with green highlights on dark purple stems. Terrific for edging the shade border, in the rock garden, or in containers. Deciduous. Leaves may be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring

This is a large, arching, deciduous male fern with erect, stout rhizomes and medium green blades (fronds) that grow to 3’ (less frequently to 4’) tall.

Dense bushes of bright green 4 to 5 foot fronds with contracted tips bearing abortive spores are semi evergreen and enjoy life in moist shade. This sterile hybrid, though southern in origin is wonderfully versatile and will withstand cold winters and do well in areas of high summer heat as well.

Typically grows in clumps to 2-3' tall, but with constant moisture can reach 5' in height. Separate spore-bearing, stiff, fertile fronds appear in early spring, quickly turning brown. The familiar "fiddleheads" also emerge from the base of the plant and unfurl into large, erect, pinnately-compound, yellowish-green, sterile fronds (2-4' long) which remain attractive throughout the summer and turn yellow in autumn. The common name of this plant is in reference to the cinnamon colored fibers found near the frond bases. 

‘Bronxensis’ is an unusual low, spreading, flat-topped cultivar that grows to only 12” tall but spreads to 24-36” wide. Ovate bright green leaves are serrated. Light yellow flowers.
