A very unique and rewarding hardy fern, this delightful selection performs well in any rich, evenly moist soil. As it name implies it towers above other painted ferns. It forms a massive, arching clump of silvery fronds with green highlights on dark purple stems. Terrific for edging the shade border, in the rock garden, or in containers. Deciduous. Leaves may be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring

Typically grows in clumps to 2-3' tall, but with constant moisture can reach 5' in height. Separate spore-bearing, stiff, fertile fronds appear in early spring, quickly turning brown. The familiar "fiddleheads" also emerge from the base of the plant and unfurl into large, erect, pinnately-compound, yellowish-green, sterile fronds (2-4' long) which remain attractive throughout the summer and turn yellow in autumn. The common name of this plant is in reference to the cinnamon colored fibers found near the frond bases. 

Used in multiple ways in cooking.  As an herb, the feathery fronds have a dill-like flavor. As a vegetable, use the spreading bulbous base that has a texture much like celery. For stronger aromatics, use the seeds. Great in soups and  fish.

Can be used in place of Green Fennel in any recipe, and the soft wispy leaves with their unique bronze color add a lot of visual interest in the flower or herb garden. With a height of four feet and a breadth almost as great, its wide spreading grace also makes it the perfect back of the border plant for cottage gardens.
