Mesa Red Blanket Flower, Gaillardia, brings its huge flowers of brick red abundantly in summer. Highly rated for its exceptional performance, tolerance of tough conditions, uniform, compact, well-branched habit, and luscious flowers. Gaura lindheimeri, commonly called gaura, is a herbaceous clump-forming perennial that is native to Texas and Louisiana. It grows to as much as 5' tall on stems clad with spoon-shaped to lanceolate leaves (to 3" long). Pinkish buds along wiry, erect, wand-like stems open to white flowers which slowly fade to pink. Flowers appear in long, open, terminal panicles and open only a few at a time. Narrow, lance-shaped, stemless leaves (1-3" long) are occasionally spotted with maroon.

This gaura cultivar is a compact vase-shaped perennial with wiry, arching red stems, pink flower buds and snow white flowers which appear in long, wand-like panicles that dance in the wind.

A reliably hardy Jasmine with a profuse display of clear yellow, very fragrant trumpet flowers in late March or April. Twining vines of shiny green leaves on reddish brown stems are best grown on an arbor, trellis or fence.  Evergreen leaves turn bronze in winter.

A hardy Geranium, Bloody Cranesbill is one of the most popular of them all, blooming for months throughout the summer with little care. In autumn the leaves turn bright red, adding vibrancy to the fall garden.

Geranium sanguineum striatum is a low grower whose pink flowers abound from late May through June, with rebloom continuing until early August. A superb edging or rock garden plant in average to dry soils.

Geum triflorum is a North American native prairie plant. Perhaps its most distinguishing feature is not the reddish pink to purplish, nodding, globular flowers that bloom in late spring, but the fruiting heads which follow. As the flower fades and the seeds begin to form, the styles elongate (to 2" long) to form upright, feathery gray tails which collectively resemble a plume or feather duster, all of which has given rise to a large number of regional descriptive common names for this plant such as torch flower, long-plumed purple avens, prairie smoke, lion's beard and old man's whiskers. The feathery seed tails act as sails in aiding dispersal of the seeds. A soft, hairy plant growing typically to 16" tall with fern-like, pinnately divided, green leaves (7-19 leaflets).

Lemon and Lime variegated grass-like foliage on a semi-evergreen bog or rain garden groundcover. Full sun tolerant, but would like some heat relief in summer.

‘Blackhawks’ is an exciting new stand-out cultivar grown as a seedling of Andropogon gerardii ‘Red October.’ The upright foliage starts dark green but begins to turn purple in August as nights cool and is nearly black by late September.

Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a charming warm-season grass with distinctive oat-like seeds that dangle along one side of the stalk. The small bright purple and orange flowers are especially attractive when the grass blooms in late summer. Compact and low-growing, this prairie grass forms a good sized clump around 2.5’ high with attractive bluish foliage. The fall color is shades of gold. Sideoats’ height and shape are a great fit with other prairie perennials in both smaller gardens and meadow landscapes. This remarkably tough grass is drought tolerant and not very aggressive. Full sun is required but just about any type of soil will do, including dry sand, gravel, and even in medium clay.

It is a low-growing cultivar reaching only about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide with flower spikes about 4 feet high. It is a warm season grass with bright green leaves and golden flower that are visible in summer.

Clean green and white variegated blades with a summer display of feathery plumes that hold through the season. Full to part sun exposure, average soils, deer/rabbit resistant. Easy to grow.

Calamagrostis brachytricha, a species of reed grass, is a slowly-spreading, clump-forming, warm season ornamental grass which features a mound of narrow, stiff, green leaves (1/4 to 5/8" wide) typically growing to 2' tall and as wide. Pinkish tinged flower plumes appear in late summer atop stems rising well above the foliage clump to 4' tall. Plumes mature to a light tan as the seeds ripen, but tend to disintegrate by early winter. Foliage turns yellowish beige in fall.

With long, fine-textured leaves it forms an impressive upright tuft. In the landscape, create a stylish display by weaving sweeps of ‘Red Rooster’ among green sedges along pebble pathways. Its reddish bronze color is most rewarding contrasted with green foliage or stonework rather than the browns of mulch or bare soil. Carex buchananii ‘Red Rooster’ also brings texture to mixed plantings and it keeps its color throughout the year, making it a fine addition to fall and winter containers. ‘Red Rooster’ prefers full sun and good drainage.

Creeping sedge is a native semi-evergreen to evergreen sedge that performs well in part shade to shade in medium to wet sites. It is found in moist wet woods in the eastern USA. It grows to 1 foot high and about as wide. Even though it is evergreen it will perform best if cut down in late winter.  In addition, Carex laxiculmus is heat tolerant and flourishes well under dry shade conditions.

Shiny dark green leaves with clear white margins. Excellent groundcover for lighting up the woodland border.

Chasmanthium latifolium, a clump-forming, upright, ornamental grass, is a Missouri native plant which typically grows 2-5' and most often occurs in rich woods or rocky slopes along streams and on moist bluffs. This grass is perhaps most distinguished by the flat, drooping seed heads which hang in terminal clusters on thread-like pedicils from slightly arching stems. Seed heads will flutter when caressed by even the softest of breezes. Seed heads emerge green but turn purplish bronze by late summer. Bright green leaves (5-9" long) turn a coppery color after frost and eventually brown by winter. Excellent for dried flower arrangements.

Purple Love Grass is a perennial, warm season grass that grows actively during the summer when soil temperatures are warm. It reaches heights of 1-2 feet even in the driest, poorest of soils. It thrives in full sun and sandy sites - even roadsides that receive winter road salt. Purple Love Grass can also grow under Black Walnut trees where other plants fail.

Densely packed steel blue blades offer fountain-like structural interest and color to the border. In summer, flowering airy tan panicle stems shoot skyward above the grassy foliage. Juncus effuses, commonly known as soft rush, common rush, bog rush or mat rush, is a grasslike-like, rhizomatous, wetland perennial that features smooth, upright, cylindrical, unjointed, spire-like green stems (leaves are absent) which grow in spreading basal clumps to 20-40” tall. It is one of the true rushes. It has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution, being found in many places around the world, but primarily in cool-temperate regions, particularly ones having wet soils. It is often found growing in ditches, bogs, swamps, marshes, wet pastures, and along the margins of lakes and rivers.

Commonly known as both Bunny Tails and Hare's Tail, this ornamental grass is neat and compact, topped by chartreuse puffballs that really do resemble little rabbit tails!

Plants form a dense mound of beautiful chartreuse-yellow foliage in spring, bearing short spikes of green flowers in early summer. A superb companion to spring flowering bulbs of all kinds, also intermingling well with Hostas or ferns.

'Purpurascens', commonly called flame grass, is noted for its superior orange-red fall color. It is a compact, upright, warm season, clump-forming ornamental grass which typically grows to 3-4' (infrequently to 5') tall. Features medium green blades (1/2" wide) with a reddish tinge which gradually develop further reddish hues as summer progresses, eventually turning a brilliant orange-red in fall. Foliage gradually darkens to an attractive burgundy by winter. Tiny reddish-tinged flowers appear in tassel-like inflorescences above the foliage in late summer, gradually turning into creamy white plumes by fall as the seeds mature. Burgundy foliage and creamy white seed plumes persist well into winter providing good winter interest.

A new introduction of the popular "Zebra" grass with compact, upright growth, rust resistant horizontal bands and sterile. Great color and texture for the smaller spaces and containers.
