A deciduous, clump-forming, Missouri native fern which typically grows 1.5 to 2' tall and is most frequently found on rich wooded slopes, ravine bottoms and damp shady woods. Features finely-textured, somewhat frilly fronds which have curved stalks and are palmately-divided. Wiry stems are reddish-brown to black. 

From the garden of Virginia's Nancy Swell comes this stunning lady fern with silver-white fronds and a decidedly upright habit. Leaves age to light green with new fronds appearing throughout the season. Upright with a beautiful formal appearance that really stands out in the shady garden. This fern really prefers shade and will stand up with all fronds perpendicular to the ground in full sun.

A very unique and rewarding hardy fern, this delightful selection performs well in any rich, evenly moist soil. As it name implies it towers above other painted ferns. It forms a massive, arching clump of silvery fronds with green highlights on dark purple stems. Terrific for edging the shade border, in the rock garden, or in containers. Deciduous. Leaves may be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring

This is a large, arching, deciduous male fern with erect, stout rhizomes and medium green blades (fronds) that grow to 3’ (less frequently to 4’) tall.

Dryopteris pulcherrima is a beautiful fern, as the name implies (the Latin word pulcherrima means beautiful). Resembling a slightly lacier version of Dryopteris marginalis, Dryopteris pulcherrima forms an 18" tall x 2' wide evergreen specimen in the woodland garden. A rich, moist, compost-laden soil grows the best specimens.

Dense bushes of bright green 4 to 5 foot fronds with contracted tips bearing abortive spores are semi evergreen and enjoy life in moist shade. This sterile hybrid, though southern in origin is wonderfully versatile and will withstand cold winters and do well in areas of high summer heat as well.

In its native swampy areas, ostrich fern will grow to 7ft, but in cultivated sites it will usually grow to  just 4ft.  Can be used with spring bulbs to hide their foliage after blooming.

Typically grows in clumps to 2-3' tall, but with constant moisture can reach 5' in height. Separate spore-bearing, stiff, fertile fronds appear in early spring, quickly turning brown. The familiar "fiddleheads" also emerge from the base of the plant and unfurl into large, erect, pinnately-compound, yellowish-green, sterile fronds (2-4' long) which remain attractive throughout the summer and turn yellow in autumn. The common name of this plant is in reference to the cinnamon colored fibers found near the frond bases. 

A fantastic native American fern with handsome semi-evergreen fronds. Requires moist, acidic shady sites; best with constant moisture.

'Variegata' has variegated leaves and more compact growth. It is an upright, clump-forming perennial that typically grows 2-4' tall and features branched, terminal, astilbe-like, 4-6" long panicles (corymbs) of tiny, fragrant, creamy white flowers in early to mid summer. Compound-pinnate, bright green leaves (7-9 lance-shaped leaflets each) are variegated with pale yellow stripes or blotches. A good foliage plant that is valued as much for its leaves as it is for its flowers.
