Amorpha canescens, commonly called called lead plant, is a Missouri native that typically occurs in open woodlands, glades and prairies. This pea/bean family member is a somewhat ungainly, deciduous shrub growing 1-3' tall and featuring slender, dense, 4-8" spike-like clusters of tiny, bluish-purple flowers with gold anthers which bloom in May-June. It also features alternate, pinnately compound leaves with grayish green leaflets and densely hairy twigs.

A great multi-season native, ‘Butterscotch’ has an improved form with reddish stems and develops attractive steel blue flowers in the summer. It is also resistant to tip dieback many other amsonia experience. The rich fall appearance brings life to any landscape.

Antennaria plantaginifolia, commonly called pussytoes, plantain-leaved pussytoes, plantain-leaved everlasting and ladies' tobacco, is a Missouri native perennial which typically grows in acid soils on dry or rocky slopes, prairies and glades throughout the State. It is a stoloniferous, mat-forming, woolly plant, with all of the leaves and flower stalks being woolly and grayish. Somewhat non-showy, fuzzy, whitish flower heads tinged with pink bloom in spring. Flowers are crowded into terminal clusters (corymbs) atop small-leaved flowering stems rising to 10" high from a basal rosette of paddle-shaped leaves (to 3" long). Plants are dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants), with male flowers typically appearing on shorter flower stalks.

Grow in fertile, preferably moist but well-drained soil in partial or full sun. Plants are deciduous, so they will lose their leaves in mid-fall and form new leaves mid- to late-winter.

Masses of brilliant violet-blue flowers with white corollas and golden-yellow stamens on attractive, well-rounded, 14 in. tall plants. Winter hardy to zone 3.

Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade. Provide moisture-retaining, but not water-logged soil with added humus. May go dormant in hot summer months. Cultivate soil around base in late fall.

A unique golden-leafed plant for the shade. The color will be brighter yellow in part sun, and more chartreuse or lime green in full shade. Tiny white flowers. After blooming, deep purplish black, inedible berries.

Arisaema triphyllum, commonly called Jack-in-the-pulpit, is a spring woodland wildflower usually growing 1- 2' tall. Flower structure consists of the spadix (Jack) which is an erect spike containing numerous, tiny, green to purple flowers and the sheath-like spathe (pulpit) which encases the lower part of the spadix and then opens to form a hood extending over the top of the spadix. The outside of the spathe is usually green or purple and the inside is usually striped purple and greenish white, though considerable color variations exist. Two large green, compound, long-petioled leaves (1-1.5' long), divided into three leaflets each, emanate upward from a single stalk and provide umbrella-like shade to the flower. The fleshy stalk and leaves lend an almost tropical aura to the plant. Flowering plants initially produce only male flowers, but become hermaphroditic as they further age (male flowers on upper part of spadix and female on lower part). Most plants in a colony will vanish by mid-summer (become dormant), but the mature, hermaphroditic flowering plant will produce a cluster of red berries in mid to late summer which becomes visible as the spathe withers.

Aristolochia tomentosa, commonly called Dutchman's pipe, is a woody, deciduous, twining vine which is native to Missouri where it typically occurs along streams and in moist woods primarily in counties south of the Missouri River. It is typically seen in the wild climbing trees or shrubs and can rapidly grow to 20-30' tall. Features large, heart-shaped, densely-overlapping leaves (4-8" long) which can quickly cover an arbor or trellis with deep green foliage. Blooms in mid to late spring in the St. Louis area. Although the flowers make interesting conversation pieces, they are usually hidden by the dense foliage and are somewhat inconspicuous. Flowers give way to ribbed, tubular seed capsules (to 3" long) which mature to a grayish-brown in September. The leaves, young stems and flowers of this species are hairy (tomentose as the species name suggests). Very similar to A. macrophylla which is native to eastern North America, except A. macrophylla is basically glabrous (smooth). Aristolochia is a larval plant for the pipe vine swallowtail butterfly.

 Fern-like, bi- to tri- pinnately compound, dark green leaves on dark red stems form an attractive astilbe-like foliage mound. Elongate terminal and axillary panicles (each to 7” long) of tiny, creamy white flowers rise well above the foliage mound in late spring

An early summer bloomer, this Korean native produces a 6-8in mound of finely dissected leaves  supporting 12in spires of creamy flowers - useful in the border front or part shade rock garden.

A tall, erect, bushy, clump-forming plant typically growing 4-6' high which features pinnately compound, dark green foliage and showy, plume-like spikes of tiny, cream colored flowers which rise well above the foliage in early to mid summer, creating a bold effect. 

‘Soulmate’ Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) lights up the mid-to-late summer garden with clusters of pink petals surrounding a white heart. Larval food and Nectar source for Butterflies, Bees and Hummingbirds.

‘Cinderella’ has clusters of 2 in. wide vanilla-scented flower heads. The individual flowers have pink to dark pink reflexed petals and a pink to white crown. ‘Cinderella’ grows from 2 to 4 ft. tall (sometimes to 5 ft.) and 1 to 3 ft. wide.

This species is closely related to the Common milkweed, A. syriaca, with which it sometimes hybridizes at the eastern limits of its distribution. These species are similar in appearance and growth form (tall and robust), but can be distinguished by the layer of fine white hairs on A. speciosa and flowers that look like small crowns. Unlike A. syriaca, A. speciosa does not form large clones.
